Notes for THOMAS EVANS:

Thomas Evans was an eminent minister among Friends, whose preaching was characterized by "winning eloquence." An extended memorial of him is in the collection published by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1879. He received a strong religious impression in youth; at 21 he began business; at 23 he went as companion to George Withy, an English minister, and traveled four months in the Southern and Western States. At the time of the Separation in the Society of Friends, 1827-8, he took an active and very prominent part (on the side of the body distinguished as Orthodox.) He first spoke in the ministry in 1832, while on a religious visit to Virginia, but did not again speak for some years, -- about 1838. In 1844 his ministry was approved. About this time his health became much impaired, and he fixed his residence for four years in the country, after which he returned to the city. In 1837 he joined his brother William in editing "Friends' Library", a series of fourteen volumes and later, "Piety Promoted." He wrote, besides, "A Concise Account of the Religious Society of Friends," "An Exposition of the Faith of the Religious Society of Friends," "Youthful Piety", etc. His feeble health was occasioned in part, if not entirely, by an injury to his spine caused by extreme exertions on board a ship, during a storm, on a voyage to Charleston, SC., his errand being to look after the Friends' meeting property in that city.

Notes for HENRY JONES:

Duane Shoemaker (Worldconnect):

Henry and his wife Mary spent some time at the Great Nemaha Agency as a trader for the U.S. Government for the Department of Indian Affairs.

Henry's diary tells of his experiences as a trader on the Indian reservation. The following is from the Great Nemaha Agency Collections (http://specialcollections.wichita.edu/Collections/ms/94-07/94-7-B.HTML):

Thomas Lightfoot to S. M. Janney, 5th month, 15th 1870. Enclosing license and band of Henry Jones as trader with the Iowa and Sac and Fox tribes. Please advise the writer about this as soon as possible. The former trader has resigned, there is no trader, and one is needed.

The following entries are from his dairy while traveling as a trader for the Great Nemaha Agency. (A trading post fo the indians)

"Fifth Month of 1870 on the 15 day:

Arrived at Thomas Lightfoot's on the Great Nemaha Agency about 1 o'clock pm and was hospitably received. This Agency lies about 5 miles from White Cloud, bounded on the NE by the Missouri River, on the NW by the Nemaha on the S by Kansas, and contians 3200 acres that has 294 indians--214 Iowas and 80 Sacs and Fox's. The land is much like Missouri with rolling praire, the streams timbered--day clear and bright."

16 day:

Saw today some of the indians and also David Holt the "Trader" whose place I am about to take. Will take perhaps, some of his goods. His "Trading House" is a half mile distant but Thomas proposed bringing it near his dwelling in a part of the "Council House". The air is coming form the S, but feels clear and pure. We all think we feel aa perceptible difference from our Soutern airs at home."

Fourth Month of 1871 on the 7th day:

Time, that continuous doer to move onward with steady undeviating progress, has again brought the return of my birth day. A prince in the comander of time that makes my years number fifty five. Fifty five! Ah, fleetly (?) do the years fly! It seams but a little while ago, that I danced away the happy hours of youth. Bless hours departed never more to return--farewell. A this period I propose to pause and cease from a daily record. Is (?), that I make such an attempt once before. Trifling and unimportant as these pages are I find the resolve to discontinue them, cause with a dress of fattering and not as a joy--giving thing. Habit has a strong controlling influence and now after the lapse of 34 years (I think it is) to abandon this writing, forming (?) a daily record during said turn of my humble life, and of numerous passing counts has a (?) strangeness, a sense comparable to that of parting with a time--honored and familiar friend. But as friends must at some period part and friendships sooner or later be (?) so dear Diary must we. When first we essayed this task life to me was in its ripened morn. The pulse beat free, and the beat in accord with nature, caught from thence joy and gladness. But now, a change has come over the spirit of my early dream. The brow has lost its smoothness, the age its keen vision, the knee its supleness, while thickly lie the silvery hairs. My pupose is to omit a daily record and instead perhaps make occasional notes of passing events.

April 1871 Second day:

At last I have secured the services of a young man (Uriah Wagner) and there hope to be releived of milking--Have agreed to pay him $8 per month for 6 months. Father-in-Law, who for long years have lived in the enjoyment of unusual health, is I regret to think, seriously afflicted. For two or three months he has complained of pain in one foot and it has now developed into a case of "Gangrene".

Sixth Month of 1871 4th day:

At Little Dublin Meeting in morning. I regret that appearances indicate its decline and fall. It is a quiet little place, fit for quiet thought and internal sein of mind. Previous to going, visited the sick coloured boy we took home last week. The poor fellow seemed much pleased by our visit and little gifts. Last week we had a June rain that rejoiced the hearts of the people."

She was born December 08, 1799 in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania, and died January 06, 1877 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.

Howard Jenkins:  Dr. Antrim Foulke, the son of Theophilus, the younger, was born at Richland, March 23, 1793. The accidental death of his father, when he was but three years old, left him in the sole care of his mother. At her desire he learned the trade of a coach-maker, but having completed it, at the age of twenty-one, he turned his attention to the profession of medicine, and studied with Dr. Joseph Meredith, at Gwynedd, whom he joined, after completing his studies, as a partner, and so continued until Dr. Meredith's death. He then remained in practice at Gwynedd, with remarkable success, until 1848, when he removed to Philadelphia, and there practiced until his death, in 1861. He was by many elements of character admirably fitted for his profession, and his wide range of visits to the country around his residence testified to the confidence reposed in him.

523. SARAH FOULKE (THEOPHILUS6, THEOPHILUS5, ANN4 WILLIAMS, MARY3 EVANS, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) was born January 10, 1797 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died October 25, 1852 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. She married RICHARD MOORE January 07, 1819, son of HENRY MOORE and PRISCILLA JACKSON. He was born April 20, 1794 in Montgomery twp., Montgomery Co., PA, and died April 30, 1875 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

Notes for RICHARD MOORE:

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/bucks/history/local/davis/davis50-51.txt

["I have twice been granted interviews by Alfred Moore, grandson of Richard, and learn from him that Richard Moore, while not ready to unite with the early Abolitionists in their revolutionary motto, 'No Union with slaveholders,' still felt prompted, by kind sympathy, to help on their way the escaping fugitives. His home soon became known to the Friends further south as a place where all fugitives forwarded would receive kindly care and needed assistance in continued flight. Although slaveholders rarely proceeded so far as this in pursuit of their slaves, they occasionally did so, and, more than once the master presented himself at the front door of Richard Moore, a few minutes after the object of his search, being warned of his approach, had escaped by a back door to a safe place of concealment in the rear. From a record he kept, the number of fugitive slaves he assisted to escape, down to the Civil war, was about six hundred."*]

[One of the slaves, who reached the Quakertown station about the time of the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, 1850, had escaped from Abraham Shriner, Pipe creek, Maryland. At home he was known as "Bill Budd," but now assumed that of "Henry Franklin." He was employed as Richard Moore's carter several years, and, in this capacity, was enabled to assist on their way to Canada several fugitives. He was employed carting coal from the Lehigh to Quakertown, and, when there were fugitives to be sent forward, he would load his wagon with them in the evening, cover them with straw, take them up to the next station during the night, and return with a load of coal next day. It is thought one of the fugitives who then escaped was Parker, the principal hero of the Christiana tragedy. Franklin afterward became janitor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, where he died.*] (Bucks County History, 1901)

In a paper read before the Montgomery County Historical Society, by the late Dr. Hiram Corson, reference was made to several interesting cases of escaped slaves whom he forwarded to Richard Moore and others in Bucks county. The road, with its stations and substations, often took a zigzag direction to elude pursuit, or suit the convenience of the road agents.

Charles F. Jenkins
by Howard Jenkins

He was the son of Edward, and the great-grandson of Jenkin Jenkin, the immigrant. He was born at Gwynedd, March 18, 1793, and died there February 5, 1867. He received instruction at the academy of Enoch Lewis, the eminent teacher and methematician at New Garden, Chester county; but he added to his opportunities of education a studious and intellectual habit, reading throughout his life, with intelligence and zest, upon an extensive range of subjects. Having been brought up in his father's store in Gwynedd, he engaged in mercantile business in Philadelphia (for some time on Second Street, opposite Christ Church), for fourteen years, with good success; but in 1830, upon the decease of his father, he returned to Gwynedd, and took the store, which he conducted nearly to the close of his life. He took a very active interest in public affairs, was for many years a director of the public schools, and was the candidate of his party (it being, however, in the minority for a long period), for the Legislature, etc. His promotion of the construction of the turnpike has already been mentioned. He was, besides, secretary for many years of the Bethlehem turnpike, a director of the Bank of Montgomery County, and of the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, etc.

Roberts Vaux, the eldest son of Richard and Ann (Roberts) Vaux, was born in Philadelphia in 1786. A descendant of English Quakers, he was among the first generation of his family to be born on American soil. Roberts's father, Richard (1751-1790), had arrived in Philadelphia in 1768 as an apprentice and later established a successful mercantile business. Roberts followed in his father's footsteps as a merchant for a short time, but soon pursued a career in philanthropy. His name is associated with many of Philadelphia's early charitable institutions and organizations, with most of his efforts focused on education and penal reform. Following his death in 1836, his son, Richard (1816-1895), served the public as well, in his one term as mayor of Philadelphia from 1856 to 1858, and later through his association with the Democratic Party.

She married GEORGE FOX 1803 in Philadelphia, PA, son of JOSEPH FOX and ELIZABETH MICKLE. He was born November 27, 1759 in Philadelphia, PA, and died September 1828 in Philadelphia, PA.

Notes for GEORGE FOX:

http://www.amphilsoc.org/library/mole/f/franklin/wtfgfox.htm

The sons of Joseph Fox and Elizabeth Mickle, George (1759-1828) and Samuel Mickel Fox I (1763-1808) became intimate friends of Benjamin Franklin's grandson William Temple Franklin. George, a physician who was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1784, represented Philadelphia in the Assembly in 1800, and was an organizer and director of the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal and an early supporter of the bank of North America, of which he was Director from 1818 until 1828. Samuel also served in public office as a member of City Council, the Common Council (1793-1797), and the Upper Chamber (1797-1800), and he was both an incorporator of the Bank of Pennsylvania and its President from 1797-1808. After the Indian treaties of 1784 and 1785, Samuel and George invested heavily in lands in northern and western Pennsylvania, often investing with the Morrises and other Philadelphians. At his death, Samuel held 118,000 acres.

When Temple Franklin returned to Europe in 1792, he turned to his old friend George Fox to oversee his interests in America, particularly the land holdings he inherited and purchased from his father and grandfather. Franklin also left the balance of his grandfather's papers at Fox's estate Champlost, where they had been stored since Benjamin's death in 1790, and most of these were donated to the American Philosophical Society in 1840 after having passed to Fox's son Charles Pemberton Fox.

As a fellow investor and overseer of William Temple Franklin's financial interests in the United States, George Fox had a detailed view of the investments of the beloved grandson of Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin-Fox Collection contains 98 items, consisting mostly of letters from William Temple Franklin to George Fox regarding land holdings and finances, and retained copies of Fox's letters to Franklin. The correspondence is fairly relentlessly focused on business matters and rarely contains personal comments, however there are occasional requests for books and two reference to the yellow fever epidemic of 1798 and the death of Benjamin Franklin Bache.

Welcome

Welcome!

 Welcome 1

Folks come to us looking for a spiritual home. Please visit. Quakers believe in the presence of God in everyone. Regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or reason, you will find a warm welcome from us.

In addition to our belief in that of God in everyone, we believe in direct communion with the Divine. In other words, Spirit speaks and guide us directly. Our worship is in silence as we wait expectantly for that connection.

In worship we gather in silence, quiet our minds, calm our hearts, and seek the source of love and truth in our lives. At times, Friends feel called to stand and speak a message given from the divine.

We eagerly welcome believers of all faiths as fellow members of God's universal community. Our Meeting for Worship service, Sundays at 9:30 AM, is open to everyone in person and on a Zoom link. We also have Worship on Wednesday evenings at 8PM on the same Zoom link.

We enter our worship rooms quietly. The worship begins as you enter in silence. There are no assigned seats. We do not have a pastor who leads us.

We Quakers bear witness to our core beliefs through direct action on a variety of social concerns, like housing the homeless, supporting food banks, and standing vigil for peace. We work locally, nationally, and internationally. Quakers often say, “Our service begins when worship ends.”
