Howard Jenkins: Rowland, the son of John and Eleanor, of Gwynedd, and brother to Dr. Cadwalader, was prominent in public affairs for many years. He was appointed justice of the peace in 1749, 1752, 1757, and 1761. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly for Philadelphia County in 1761, and from that year on to 1771, inclusive (except 1764). His residence was first in Gwynedd, and in 1760 he owned part of his father's tract. At a later date (as early as 1766) he removed to Providence, and he was in business there for a number of years. The Philadelphia Gazette, June 30, 1784, contains his card, announcing that he "has lately removed form his former Residence in Providence Township, Philadelphia County," and that he is prepared to draw "Deeds, mortgages, articles of agreement, and other instruments of writing, at his house on the east side of Fourth street, a few doors below Race street." September 14, 1785, he was appointed one of the Commissioners of the General Loan Office of Pennsylvania, and he held this place until his death, August 8, 1789. Like his brother Cadwalader, he took an interest in scientific study, and he was elected a member of the "American Society for the Promotion of Useful Knowledge," which was united with the American Philosophical Society in 1769. The Pennsylvania Gazette of Wednesday, August 19, 1789, contained the following notice:

"On Saturday se'ennight died Rowland Evans, Esquire, of this city, in the seventy-second year of age. Previous to the revolution this gentleman was for many years a member of the Legislature and a Justice of the Peace, both of which he filled with great ability, dignity, and applause. And since the conclusion of the war, he was appointed one of the Trustees of the general loan office of this commonwealth, which he held to the time of his death, and on Sunday following a great assemblage of the people attended at the deposit of his remains in the Quakers' burial ground in this place [Philadelphia].

ii. ELISHA EVANS, d. Of Norristown, Montgomery Co., PA.

Notes for ELISHA EVANS: "Keeps a tavern at Norristown" (Evans document of 1797)

Mary Holstein Inherited the 400 acres Holstein tract at the Swede's Ford from her father, now the site of Bridgeport, PA. Her husband (Levi Bartleson) divided the tract and 189 1/2 acres were sold to William Lane and from him they went by purchase to James Philip Delacour, who sold it 166 acres to General Du Portail, a French officer in the American service, in 1795. Du Portail left America for France, and never returned, the history of his fate having been unknown. The purchase remained unclaimed for some years; taxes having accumulated upon it, it fell into the hands of the Sheriff, and was purchased by Elisha Evans; from him it came into the possession of his son, the present (1860) Cadwallader Evans, who laid out the upper part of Bridgeport in 1825, and contributed largely to its improvements. His residence at the corner of De Kalb and Second Streets, is upon the upper part of the tract, the boundary of which is the same as that of the upper boundary of the borough. From 1860 Directory of Norristown (Historical Society of Montomgery Co., PA web site)

101. DAVID EVANS (EVAN4, THOMAS3, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) was born Abt. 1733 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1817 in H. Jenkins says "Of Spruce St., Philadelphia PA". He married LETITIA THOMAS August 10, 1755 in Philadelphia, PA. She was born Abt. 1737 in Of Radnor twp., and died Abt. 1815 in Mifflin Co., PA.

Howard Jenkins: David Evans, "Of Spruce St.," Philadelphia, house carpenter, son of Evan, of Gwynedd, m. Aug. 10, 1755, Letitia Thomas, of Radnor. David d. 1817, aged 84, and was bu. at Friends ground, 4th and Arch Sts. This couple had a large family of children, but only part of their names, as follows have been obtained...

Glenn Evans cites the following in a note to us:

I. "Biographical Dictionary of Philadelphia Architects" by Tatman & Moss, p. 250: "David Evans is unfortunately a common 18th century Philadelphia name; the lives of three house carpenters and one cabinetmaker overlap, making it difficult to separate documentary references. Nonetheless, two master builders have been identified. David Evans (Sr.) was the son of Evan and Elizabeth (Musgrave) Evans. Apprenticed to a carpenter, he married Letitia Thomas in 1755, shortly after becoming free of his articles. By 1761 he was living on Pear (now Chancellor) St. and donated a lot of ground next to his home for the erection of the Union Library Company's building that he may also have designed and built. Evans (or his cousin of the same name who died in 1783) was a member of Benjamin Franklin's Library Company to which he presented a set of Abraham Swan's "Collection of Designs in Architecture" (London: 1757) in 1764, and a few years later he was an "encourager" of the Philadelphia edition of Swan's "The British Architect" (1774), the first book on architecture published in America. In 1769 he became a member of The Carpenters' Company and the American Philosophical Society, although he resigned from the latter in 1770 and was never too regular in is attendance at meetings of the former.

In 1770 Evans worked with Thomas Nevell (q.v.) on the Second Street house of John Cadwalader, and the next year served as "superintendent" for John Dickinson's "Fairhill" in Germantown and his town house on Chestnut St.; he continued to provide building services for Dickinson over the next 30 years. Following the Revolution, Evans and his son, David Evans, Jr. (q.v.) worked together to complete the Pennsylvania Hospital. The elder Evans offered a design for Library Hall in 1789, but William Thornton (q.v.) won the commission. That same year Evans became a Common Councilman, a position he held until 1791, and was appointed to a committee to prepare a plan and estimate for a new city hall. Payments made to Evans in 1792-93 have generally been taken as proof that he designed and supervised construction of the structure now known as the Supreme Court Building on Independence Square. From 1794 through 1809 he was a director of the Philadelphia Contributionship."

II. More can be found in the Independence National Historical Park library, i.e. Copy of "Appendix A,' apparently prepared by Lee H. Nelson, NPS architect, giving excellent summary of Mr. Evans. Also there is considerable information in a Ph.D. Dissertation by Donna J. Rilling.

Note on Letitia (Thomas) Evans:

Haverford College Library Special Collections Quaker Collection contains a 19th century hand-transcribed copy of the deathbed recollections and visions of Letitia Thomas Evans as recorded by her devoted husband David Evans. Letitia died from a lingering ailment over the period of her final weeks or days, she experienced spiritual visions and ecstasies (she refused pain medication!), which she related to her husband, who faithfully recorded them. She also spoke of memories and her love for her husband, friends and family. David wrote it all down. (note contributed by Michelle Lynch)

Philadelphia MM Records (Hinshaw):

Musgrave Evans and brother David received on certificate from Gwynedd MM dated 1748, 8, 25.

Letitia, wife of David received on certificate from Radnor MM, dated 1763, 12, 8.

iii. CHARLES EVANS, b. March 30, 1768, Of Philadelphia PA; d. September 05, 1847, Trexlertown, Berks Co., PA. (buried Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, PA)

Howard Jenkins: He was the seventh child of his parents. Settling in Reading, Berks Co., PA, he became a prominent lawyer, acquired wealth and founded the beautiful cemetery of that city now known by his name. He d. unmarried [see next as this appears not to be the case].

Michelle Lynch, Trustee, Charles Evans Cemetery writes to us:

Charles Evans died a widower. In 1794, Charles Evans married Mary Keen, the daughter of Christiana Stille and Reynolds Keen. The marriage was officiated by the Most Reverend William White, at Christ Church in Philadelphia. Mary Keen (the future Mrs. Charles Evans) lived in Reading for a brief period as a child. Her father, Reynolds Keen was for a time during the Revolutionary War suspected of being a Tory sympathizer and his home and goods were confiscated. He was exiled from Philadelphia to Reading and not permitted to return until he swore allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Her mother, Christiana, died shortly after the birth of Mary's youngest sibling while the family was in exile at Reading. Christiana's half-sister, Sarah "Sally"Austin (who was the second wife of Commodore John Barry, "Father of the American Navy") attempted to intercede on the Keen family's behalf. The Keen's youngest child (born in Reading) was named after Sarah. Charles Evans studied law in the offices of Benjamin Chew, whose home - Cliveden - is now a National Trust Property. He maintained residences in Philadelphia and Reading until 1825, after which he resided in Reading. Charles Evans' 1865 biography states that they had "no surviving children" and indicates that the children they had died in infancy. Mary Keen Evans died in 1838. She was originally interred at Christ Church. When Charles Evans founded the cemetery that bears his name in 1846, Mary's body was exhumed and reinterred at the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading.

Evans wore his hair in a ponytail called a queue even after that style fell out of fashion. He was known to enjoy dancing at the soirees held in the homes of his friends and occasionally hosted by his friends at the town's popular inns (Reading was a borough and not a city in Evans time.) The dances in those days were patterned "country" dances similar to what we call square dances. The old fiddler, Stephen Orth, recorded playing at these events and watching Charles Evans' queue bouncing as he danced. Charles' wife Mary was said to have been a "lively dancer." They were a popular couple.

Aside from his attendance at Christ Church with his wife, this dancing and his membership in the local militia are further evidence of Charles Evans' move away from his Quaker upbringing. However, his biographer wrote that after Mary's death in 1838, Charles would take his coach and ride to the Exeter or Maiden Creek Friends to attend meetings several times a year. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that he attended the Reading Friends meetings and his biographer wrote that Charles found the drives to the country as restorative as the meetings. Apparently, in his later years he experienced a longing to return to his roots.

Notes for SAMUEL EVANS:

School teacher in Gwynedd twp. He owned the place where his grandfather Thomas had lived (stone house still stands, near the corner of Sumneytown Pike and Upper Valley Rd.).

Samuel Evans (son of Owen and Ruth) was a teacher "at North Wales," towards the close of the last century. A school was kept under the oversight of the Friends, at the meeting-house, at least as early as 1793. Joseph Foulke, in a manuscript furnished the writer in 1859, recalled the following facts:

"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There was no house for the purpose, but what was called "the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament; we had Dilworth's Spelling-Book, and Dilworth's Assistant (or Arithmetic). Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was however a small part of the spelling-book called "A New Guide to the English Tongue," and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this, by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar."

According to Kate's cousin, he served in the Revolution. Kate adds that he had a daughter Eliza who married Joshua Stroud Fletcher. He was born November 13, 1711 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died October 09, 1793 in Philadelphia of Yellow fever.

Notes for OWEN JONES: George Washington pronounced him the handsomest and most venerable gentleman he had ever seen. (H. Jenkins, 1897). He was the last Provincial Treasurer of Pennsylvania and was an educated man of means and a prominent Quaker. Owen Jones was an attorney who handled many estates. He was the leader of merchants practicing Civil Disobedience in 1772 who successfully blocked the expansion of the open air market on High (now Market) St. in Philadelphia. An ally of his in this effort was Benjamin Franklin. His sons and son in laws were also merchants on High Street involved in the import/export trade and land speculation.

108. EDWARD EVANS (EVAN4, ROBERT3, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) Of South St., Philadelphia, PA. He married, perhaps, ELIZABETH GRIFFITH, daughter of EVAN GRIFFITH and JANE JONES.

Howard Jenkins: "Edward, late of South street" (Evans manuscript of 1797), who had six children as follows: 1. Francis, d. infancy, 2. Mary, d. infancy, 3. Samuel, of N. Y., Captain U. S. N., 4., George of NC., Captain U.S.N ., 5. John, Sackett's Harbor, NY., midshipman U.S.N., 6. Thomas, a sailor on brig Rattlesnake, Captain Moffatt."

A discussion of the various men with the name Edward Evans in the records of this time follows and I regard this genealogy as in a state of disrepair. All three of these men have association with both the Gwynedd area and Philadelphia County.

a) Edward Evans m. Elizabeth Griffith

Marriage:  Edward Evans of Phila. Co., yeoman m. Elizabeth Griffith d/o Evan of same at Gwynedd mh, 7th mo. 9, 1735. Col 3: Evan Griffith, Margaret Owen, Amos Griffith, Hugh Jones, Katherine Jones, Phineas Griffith, Tho Davis, Eliza Davis, Caddr Jones, John Humphrey, Enos Lewis, Jos? Griffith, Caddr Griffith, Amos Evans, Griffith Griffith, Evan Griffith, Humphrey Jones. Col 2: Ann Griffith, Ellin Griffith, Jane Lues?, Jane William, Eliza Evans, Ellin Evans, Jane Lewis, Gainor Davis, Ann Jones, Rachel Jones, Ganior Jones, Ann Roberts, Margt Jones, Eliza Morgan, Jane Jones, Hannah ffoulk, Jane Evans Jr., Col 1: Cadd Evans Sen., Evan Evans, Robert Lloyd, Thos Evans, Geo Lewis, Isaac Jones, Jacob Jones, Ellis Lewis, Jephtha Lewis, Rees Harry, Wm Martin, Owen Robert, Rich Thos, Wm Robert, Cadd Evans Jr., Rowd Evans.

The problem here is that we know the names of the children of Edward and Elizabeth, from the will of Edward's sister Catherine (Evans) and they do not match the list given by Howard Jenkins:

CATHERINE JONES, Hatfield. Phila. Co. Widow. 6 July 176?. proved December 26, 1767.
Cousin and Exec.: Amos Griffith.
Children: Nathan, Amos, Mary (Morgan), Margaret (wife of Thomas Morgan), Jane and Gainor.
Grandchildren: Hannah, Samuel, Hugh, Israel and Phebe Jones.
Isea Christian. Morgan and Isaac Catheren. Rich and Mary Morgan.
Cousins and Trustees: Evan Evans and Evan Edwards.
Nieces and Nephews: Jane, Evan, Catherine, Elizabeth, Jehu, Margaret and Ellin (children of brother Edward Evans).
Wit: Samuel Tennis and Evan Edwards. O.179

The wills of Catherine's husband Hugh Jones, names her mother Margaret. This Margaret's second husband was Thomas Owen of Salford and he names his two step children (Edward Evans and Katherine Jones) in his will (she is the Margaret Owen signing the wedding certificate above and she will marry thirdly Evan Griffith, the father of Elizabeth Griffith). There is more discussion of this family on our Griffith web page.

Three of the children of Edward Evans and Elizabeth Griffith left records at Gwynedd:

i. Jehu Evans (m. Mary) lived in Towamencin in the 1780s, administered the estate of Joseph Griffith in 1792 and had children: Elizabeth, b. 8th mo, 28, 1762; Sarah b. 8th mo. 6, 1777, d. 3d mo. 8, 1786; Phebe b. 3d mo. 3, 1782 and Jehu, b 3d mo. 2, 1787.

ii. Evan Evans is in the 1790 Montgomery Co., PA census (1 male >16, 1 male <16, 2 females, no slaves) enumerated by Richard Moore with citizens from Montgomery, Hatfield and Towamencin townships.

iii. Catharine Evans d/o Edward of Towamencin dec'd married William Luken s/o Abraham of Towamencin at Gwynedd meeting house, 10th mo 20, 1762.

After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Evans (widow of Edward) got numerous certificates between Gwynedd and Philadelphia showing movement back and forth between the two places.

At present, if I had to guess, I would pick this line as belonging here instead of the line given by Howard Jenkins (which he got from some contemporary of his from North Carolina). This line uses the name Evan Evans (Edward's father's name) and has continuing association with both Towamencin and Philadelphia that is documented.

b) Edward Evans m. Rebecca Clark.

The list of children from the 1797 Evans family history indicates that this is not the Edward Evans of Philadelphia who marries Rebecca Clark. That Edward Evans was one of the founders of Methodism in Pennsylvania and his widow left a will in Worcester twp. in 1777.

REBECCA EVANS, [Late of City of Phila]. Worcester, Co. of Phila. Widow and Relict of Edward Evans, Late of said City, decd.
July 1, 1777. August 17, 1787. Philadelphia Will Book T.535.
Sister: Elizabeth Clark.
Friends: Elizabeth Story, Sarah Williams.
Exec: Elizabeth Clark, John Pemberton.
Wit: Jonathan Jones, Hannah Jones.

There may be some association of this Edward Evans with Bethel Hill Methodist Church on Skippack Pike in Worcester twp., as well as several other churches in Philadelphia, Berks Co. and New Jersey. It appears that despite his being a Methodist, the entries in the Philadelphia MM records are this man, and there are no mentions of the Edward Evans of South St., Philadelphia:

Phila MM, 1737, 3, 5. Edward Evans, Phila, m. Rebecca Clark, dt. William of Phila at Phila Mtg.
Phila MM, 1742, 1, 26. Edward Evans disowned for joining another society.
Death: 13 OCT 1771 recorded by Philadelphia MM , Pennsylvania. (He actually seems to have died the day before.) He was buried at the Friends Burial Ground (now Arch St. Meeting House).

This man had a known son named Nathaniel, also a minister, and the list of children from the 1797 document shows no son by this name. The Methodist history indicates he may be from a New Jersey Evans line.

Howard Jenkins covers this line in footnote 2 of his Evans genealogy, "Edwards Evans, of Philadelphia, a prominent man there, who d. 10th mo. 13, 1771 (Friends' m. records), may have been Edward, "of South Street", son of Evan. The meeting records also show the marriage of Edward Evans, of Philadelphia, and Rebecca Clark, dau. of William, dec'd at Philadelphia mtg., 3d mo. 5, 1757; and that Rebecca, "widow of Edward," d. 1st mo. 1, 1785, aged about 80 years." Apparently Jenkins was as confused as the rest of us.

c) Edward Evans "of Dublin, Philadelphia County" m. Elizabeth Jones (d/o Humphrey Jones and Catherine Jones)

Edward Evans in Gwynedd MM records

1747-7-29 Edward Evans and wife disowned (could be Edward Evans m. either Elizabeth Griffith or Elizabeth Jones)
1751-2-30 Edward Evans and wife married contrary to discipline and offered an account (indicates someone remarried, not sure who)
1763-2-22 Edward Evans granted a certificate to Richland MM (this looks like a third Edward Evans at Gwynedd)

William Luken s/o Abraham of Towamencin m. Catharine Evans d/o Edward of same dec'd at Gwynedd mh, 10th mo 20, 1762. Shows one of the Edward Evans was of Towamencin and has died before 1762. This is most likely the Edward who married Elizabeth Griffith as son Jehu is found living in Towamencin in the 1780s.

109. KATHERINE EVANS (EVAN4, ROBERT3, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) She married HUGH JONES.

Howard Jenkins: Katherine, m. __ Jones, son of G. Jones, and they had a son Samuel, who m. Rebecca Morgan; whose dau. Sarah m. John Childs of North Carolina. A son of this last couple, also named John Childs, m. Mary Treby, dau. of Rev. Thomas and Margaret Allen; and had issue nine children, of whom the seond is Allen Childs b. in North Carolina, 1844, now (1884) of Philadelphia. He m. 1878, Katherine, dau. of Col. John D. Kurtz, U. S. Engineer Corps, and has issue."

I (JQ) am sceptical about the above statement (Jenkins is almost always right, but...) because of the following wills, which clearly state the name of Catherine's husband (note Catherine's mother is named) and names no son Samuel. Of course, it is possible that the Catherine who marries Hugh Jones, her mother Margaret, and her brother Edward (#108 above, m. Elizabeth Griffith) do not belong in this line and that Jenkins got it right.

JQ: I believe that this is the John Evans whose home was used as the meeting house when Gwynedd Meeting was occupied as a Military Hospital after the Battle of Germantown.

Howard Jenkins:

John Evans, of Gwynedd, son of John and Eleanor, b. 12th mo. (Feb), 1730, d. 9th mo. (Sep) 1807, m. Nov. 19, 1734, Margaret Foulke, dau. of Evan and Ellen of Gwynedd. (Margaret, b. 4th mo. 19, 1726, d. 3d mo. 6, 1798). It was this John who furnished Cadwallader, his nephew (son of Rowland), with the family data which form the basis of the Family Record of 1797 and later. He was known in Gwynedd as "John Evans, the elder" (though his own father's name was John), in order to distinguish him from his son John. He was a prominent and active member of Gwynedd meeting. Joseph Foulke gives some interesting reminiscences of him. He lived all his life at the old home of his father and grandfather, in Gwynedd now (1896) the Hollingsworth estate place). "From letters in my possession, written to his son," says Rowland Evans, Esq., "he seems to have been an earnestly religious man." His will, which presents him as quite a rich man, was probated November 6, 1807. He gives his son John the "plantation, consisting of three tracts, where he now dwells," in Gwynedd, about 192 acres; directs his son Cadwallader to release any supposed claim he may have on the fee or title, in consideration of bequests now made him; leaves two tracts (homestead) to his son Cadwalader, on 245 acres, the other 36, he to pay 500 pounds to his [the testator's] grandsons John and Robert; bequeaths to his friends Levi Foulke, Jesse Foulke, and John Jones jr., son of Evan, or their survivors, 20 pounds in trust to keep up the burial ground enclosure at Gwynedd meeting, the fund to be used in the discretion of Gwynedd preparative meeting; gives his son Cadwalader two undivided thirds in 50 acres of land adjoining the homestead, "late estate of brother Cadwalader," gives son Cadwalader the half residue of estate, the other half to grandson Robert; gives 200 pounds to son John; gives 200 pounds to grandsons Rowland and Evan in equal shares; appoints son Cadwalader and grandson Robert executors.

The second John Evans, of Gwynedd, called John "the elder," is thus described by the late Joseph Foulke: "Among the remarkable persons that I recollect in those early days [about 1800] was John Evans, the elder. He was a tall, spare person, with a long visage, and very wrinkled face. He carried a smooth cane, with a carved head and natural curve. He wore loops in his hat, with the rim slightly turned up behind and at the two sides. He and two or three others of Gwynedd were among the first who took a firm stand against the use of ardent spirits. They banished it from their houses and harvest fields, though in the face of great difficulties. One of the last meetings that John Evans attended, he spoke on this subject, saying that 'where he had endeavored most he had effected least,' but urging his hearers to persevere."

Children of JOHN EVANS and MARGARET FOULKE are:

128. JOHN HANK (SARAH4 EVANS, CADWALADER3, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) was born September 20, 1712 in Whitemarsh twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1780 in Of Rockingham Co., VA. He married MARGARET WILLIAMS Aft. February 1736/37, daughter of THOMAS WILLIAMS and JANE MORRIS. She was born April 25, 1721, and died Aft. 1787.

Notes for JOHN HANK: H.M. Jenkins (1897): "The precise name of the head of the Hank family who thus removed, is uncertain, but Mr. David Lincoln, of Birdsboro, Berks county, in a letter to me, September 1883, thinks it was John, and says: 'He lived on the Perkiomen turnpike, six miles east of Reading, in Exeter township, and within half a mile of Mordecai Lincoln, great-great-grandfather of the President. This John Hank, with John and Benjamin Lincoln, moved to Fayette county, and from there Mr. Hank went southward.'

As to a removal, first, to Fayette county, I do not know; but as has already been noted (p. 208), John Hank was in Rockingham county, Va., at least as early as 1787, when his daughter Hannah married Asa Lupton. That this John was the one described by Mr. Lincoln is probable, or he may have been a son of the Berks county man, for the latter was in all probablility the same John Hank who was born 1712, the son of the Whitemarsh yeoman and Sarah Evans of Gwynedd."

"Mordecai Lincoln's son John and Joseph's brother, John, became fast friends and both eventually migrated to Augusta county, Virginia (now Rockingham) in the early 1770s. The children of Joseph Hanks, his brother John, and Michael Ludwig all became friends, so it was natural that a marriage would occur among them.

J. Quinn adds: Evidence, including y-dna of descendants of Nancy Hanks' Lincoln's cousins Dennis and John the "Railsplitter" Hanks indicate that she is descended from a line of Hanks from Richmond Co., Virginia and documentation supports this. However, no descendant of the Gwynedd line has had their dna testing as of today (Nov 2007).

Many of the John Hank m. Margaret Williams line are from Wallace Ewing's Rootsweb Worldconnect database.

Bill Foulke: The marriage of Samuel and Ann was the first after the establishment of Richland MM. He was the clerk of the meeting for 37 years. He was a member of the provincial assembly from 1761 to 1768. He was also clerk of the committee of ministers and elders for nearly 30 years.

Samuel Foulke was a personal friend of John Woolman's. Samuel's home was the beginning and end point of Woolman's journey to visit the Leni Lenape/Moravian Indians during the French and Indian war in 1758 [from Woolman's Journal, chapter 8].

http://www.foulke.org

1742 Samuel Foulke was named as clerk of Richland Monthly Meeting when it was first established and continued in that office for thirty-seven years.

1761-1768 Represented Bucks County in the Provincial Assembly.

He was also for many years Justice of the Peace and did a vast amount of public business, writing practically all the wills and deeds for the English-speaking people of his section.

1775-81 At the outbreak of the Revolution he and his brothers, John, Thomas , and Theophilus, signed the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies as prescribed by the Pennsylvanis Assembly. This was deemed an offense against the principles of Friends by other members of the monthly meeting, and the four brothers were disowned from membership. However, he continued to sit at the head of the meeting and acted as clerk during the whole period, and did much to hold the patriotic Quakers back from active participation in war-like measure while giving their allegiance to the patriot cause in accordance with what he conceived to be conformity to the laws of the state.

It was Samuel who translated the narrative of Edward Foulke, the emigrant, into English.

Occupation: Financier

Joseph Wharton, who founded a college, was a noted financier and built the mansion, "Walnut Grove", taken by the British under the direction of Major Andrea (later hung as a spy in the Benedict Arnold treason) for a great masked ball "The Mischianza". A history of Pennsylvania describing Walnut Grove says the dining room was 40 x 210 feet by 22 feet high.

Joseph was a very successful business merchant. In the last years of his life he retired to his country estate Walnut Grove, which soon after his death was made famous by the Meschianza.

Joseph also had a comfortable home at 119 Lombard Street in Philadelphia which passed to his son William upon his death.

It is the offspring of Joseph Wharton who became dynamic forces in the Society of Friends for over a century. This is in part no doubt do to the fact that Joseph's first wife was Hannah Carpenter whom he married March 05, 1728/29 at the Philadelphia Meeting House, Philadelphia, PA. Hannah was the daughter of John and Ann Hoskins Carpenter, active members of the faith.

Welcome

Welcome!

 Welcome 1

Folks come to us looking for a spiritual home. Please visit. Quakers believe in the presence of God in everyone. Regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or reason, you will find a warm welcome from us.

In addition to our belief in that of God in everyone, we believe in direct communion with the Divine. In other words, Spirit speaks and guide us directly. Our worship is in silence as we wait expectantly for that connection.

In worship we gather in silence, quiet our minds, calm our hearts, and seek the source of love and truth in our lives. At times, Friends feel called to stand and speak a message given from the divine.

We eagerly welcome believers of all faiths as fellow members of God's universal community. Our Meeting for Worship service, Sundays at 9:30 AM, is open to everyone in person and on a Zoom link. We also have Worship on Wednesday evenings at 8PM on the same Zoom link.

We enter our worship rooms quietly. The worship begins as you enter in silence. There are no assigned seats. We do not have a pastor who leads us.

We Quakers bear witness to our core beliefs through direct action on a variety of social concerns, like housing the homeless, supporting food banks, and standing vigil for peace. We work locally, nationally, and internationally. Quakers often say, “Our service begins when worship ends.”
